Week 1 Homework, Notes, and Video

NOTE 1:  ALL HOMEWORK SHOULD BE DONE ON LEASH AND TRAINING COLLAR (YOUR MARTINGALE IN THIS CASE).

NOTE 2:  1 HOUR A DAY IS THE TIME YOU SHOULD BE WORKING YOUR DOG.  HOWEVER, EXCEPT FOR THE SIT ON THE DOG, ALL TRAINING SESSIONS SHOULD BE NO MORE THAN FIFTEEN MINUTES (AND CAN BE SHORTER).  FOR INSTANCE WITH THE LURING, I WOULD PROBABLY DO TWO SESSIONS OF FIVE MINUTES A DAY.

NOTE 3:  LINKS TO EXERCISES TO READ ARE IN BLUE.

  1. Sit on The Dog 30 + minutes   Goal:  Is for the dogs to settle in less than 5 minutes in the area you are working in (remember that it can be longer than that, but this is what I look for), and learn to relax next to you.

  2. Relax for Exam 15 minutes  Goal:  Just to have your dog learn to relax with you while they are being handled.

  3. Luring Sit, Down, Attention to Name two 5 minute sessions Goal:  To get four in a row of what you are looking for (for instance, the down is going to be a sliding scale now in that at first it is going to just be hunching over to get the treat with the butt down).  NOTE:  THE VIDEO I TOOK DID NOT COME OUT, SO I AM PUTTING ANOTHER DOG AS AN EXAMPLE HERE.

Comments

  1. Sit on the dog dependent on distractions - rainy Friday, under 2min; sunny Saturday with lots of people walking outside, over 8min to settle down.

  2. Still not getting the whole concept of down, just stretching forward. Only rewarding her when her butt stays down, but she doesn't seem to be making the connection.

Attention is really good when I have food in my hands, but is non-existent when I don't.

Biggest frustration is that she is sooooooo easily distracted and excited by any sight or sound - even with windows closed she reacts to noises outside by barking excitedly. Distracting her with food and making her calmly sit/down for it works sometimes, but sometimes she just barks at me which I try to ignore (not always possible when I'm on a call for work!).

  3. Just FYI, I don't see the comments unless I happen to go to your blog. I would not imagine she will get the down in the first week, and I may need to use a little cheat with her. For now, it is enough that she is getting used to her working with her. Don't get frustrated with her (or let her know you are frustrated) this is just week one.

  4. Also, there is no need to introduce distractions in the first week, although she gets her other dog friends here. You could just do the exercises in a room without windows first or a room where the windows are too far up to see much. We want to teach her the motor skills in low distractions at first. I can't imagine how long sit on the dog might take at a park right now LOL. I mean if you happen to have a lot of time handy, and you can cap that at an hour whether she goes down or not.
