Week 4-5 Homework and Videos
NOTE 1: TEXT BELOW IN BLUE GOES DIRECTLY TO THE DIRECTIONS OR VIDEO FOR EACH EXERCISE.
NOTE 2: YOU SHOULD WORK WITH YOUR DOG FOR AN HOUR EACH DAY. I TEND TO SEPARATE THE OBEDIENCE TRAINING UP INTO NO MORE THAN 15 MINUTE SECTIONS. SO I DO ONE OF THE CALMING EXERCISES FOR HALF THE DAY (EXCEPT PUPPY EXAM WHICH ONLY TAKES 15 MINUTES). THEN THE REST OF THE DAY I DO SESSIONS ON OBEDIENCE EXERCISES.
NOTE 3: YOU CAN USE FOOD WITH THE ECOLLAR TRAINING TO TREAT HER WHEN SHE PERFORMS CORRECTLY OR UNEXPECTEDLY DOES NOT DO SOMETHING YOU DON'T WANT HER TO DO BUT YOU EXPECTED HER TO DO.
NOTE 4: YOU CAN PROBABLY DO WORK IN A QUIET OUTSIDE AREA ON SIT ON THE DOG, RELAX FOR EXAM, SITS, LET'S GO, SEND TO PLACE (IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING PORTABLE), AND CIRCLE PLACE (ALTHOUGH YOU MAY NEED TO DECREASE THIS TO ONE CIRCLE AT A TIME OUTSIDE AND THEN BUILD IT UP).
Behavioral Calming Exercises That You Can Rotate on Different Days:
(Example Monday might be Sit on The Dog, Tuesday might be 30 minute Long Place, Wednesday might be 15 min relax for exam)
- Sit on The Dog 30 + minutes Goal: Is for the dogs to settle in less than 5 minutes in the area you are working in (remember that it can be longer than that, but this is what I look for), and learn to relax next to you. Winter is hard to do this outside, so if you find there is a nice day out, find a low to mid level outdoor area to do this. If this summer you get this outside or you are working around distractions before this summer, you can cap this exercise at an hour. This is pretty hard for your dog to do because of the anxiety.
- Relax for Exam 15 minutes Goal: Just to have your dog learn to relax with you while they are being handled.
- Long Place 30 minutes Goal: To get your dog able to stay on place for 30 minutes and increase the difficulty level gradually. You do not have to restart this if your dog gets a paw or all of him off, just get your dog back on immediately through body bump or leash correction. When I do this long one, I usually note how many times (if at all) the dog tried to leave and if there were any unusual circumstances. ON DAYS YOU ARE DOING SIT ON THE DOG, TRY TO FIT THIS IN AS A 5 MINUTE LONG PLACE.
- Let's go and Sit OR Heel and Sit 20 Minutes Goal: To get three sets of 4 in a row sits in distractions (build up to them please as you get used to the ecollar).
- Send to Place 5+ minutes for both Goal: For send to place you want to be able to get three sets of four in a row (without needing to correct or hold tension on the leash once on, so try and block any attempts off with a leash correction or body bump). Week 4 change is that you can now send while using the ecollar. The ecollar correction for not going on the place is a tap tap tap, and then I usually stop to see if she goes. You can also help her with a leash.
- Circle Place 5-10 minutes Goal: You want to be able to get four in a row easily starting for one minute. Do it slowly so it is easy before you increase the duration. Week 4 Change: You can now use the electronic collar to correct her if she tries to leave the place (beforehand use the verbal marker word no)
